BLACK PHANTOM
FLOTATION SUB
Features
- Large bore ID after activation.
- Highly tempered glass disk creates small, fragmented pieces upon opening that do not compromise the floats.
- No debris management required above floats.
- Slim OD design.
- One internal connection above the glass disk eliminates the need to pressure test from below.
- Activation pressure can be configured in 500 psi (3.5 MPa) increments.

Overview
Interra Energy’s Black Phantom™ Flotation Sub is designed to assist casing in reaching the desired depth. The Black Phantom helps reduce overall torque and drag through a proprietary activation mechanism that utilizes a glass disk to keep the section beneath the tool filled with air. With the air chamber intact throughout the horizontal section, friction is reduced allowing for the string to “float” into the well.
Operation
The Black Phantom can be installed anywhere in the casing string based on client requirements. Torque and drag modeling can assist in identifying the ideal placement of the Black Phantom.
After successfully running casing to desired depth, pressure is increased to the pre-calculated shear value, shattering the disk and enabling circulation. Upon activation, only small pieces of glass are produced, ensuring all downhole equipment is unaffected, eliminating the need for a debris sub.
Application
- Cemented and Open Hole
- Extended Reach
- Tortureous Well Path
